Trump Says Impeachment Push Is Good For His Reelection But ‘Bad For The Country’

When asked Tuesday about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plans to pursue his impeachment, President Donald Trump seemed both amused and troubled, but not for the reason you might think.

“If she does that, they all say that’s a positive for me in the election,” Trump said while meeting with world leaders at the United Nations summit in New York City. “You could also say who needs it, it’s bad for the country.”

Nancy Actually Does It

Trump made his comments before Pelosi made her formal announcement late Tuesday afternoon.

“Today I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry,” Pelosi said at the Capitol late Tuesday afternoon. “This week, the president has admitted to asking the president of Ukraine to take actions which would benefit him politically. The actions of the Trump presidency revealed dishonorable facts of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”

Media reports before Pelosi’s statement indicated that the impeachment inquiry against Trump is over reports that the President spoke to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky about possibly investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden for alleged corruption.

Trump called the move “the worst witch hunt in political history,” and said most voters would understand that Democrats are desperate.

“The good news is the voters get it,” he said. “This is why they say it’s good for the election, but you know what? It’s bad for the country, what she’s doing is very bad.”

Trump Says This Kind of Nonsense is Why Nothing Gets Done

Trump said Democrats’ obsession with removing him from the office to which he was elected has prevented everyone in Washington from getting anything done.

“Then they all wonder why they don’t get gun legislation done, then they wonder why they don’t get drug prices lowered because all they do is talk nonsense,” Trump wrote. “No more infrastructure bills, no more anything. All they do, that’s all they do. … it’s the craziest thing anybody’s seen.”

Trump authorized a release of a transcript of the call with Zelensky later on Tuesday to show there was nothing impeachable in the conversation.

“You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call,” he tweeted.

‘They never even saw the transcript’

He was shocked Pelosi was willing to move forward with impeachment, without even seeing the transcript of the call.

“I can’t even believe that it’s true,” he said. “How can you do this and you haven’t even seen the phone call?”

“The country’s doing the best it’s ever done, and I just heard that she’d like to impeach,” Trump said. “Our country’s doing the best its ever done and they’re going to lose the election and they figured this is a thing to do.”

The president also reacted to the news on Twitter.

The President has a point–why would Democrats start a witch hunt they probably won’t be able to finish before even reading the transcript?!
