Trump Defends Sanctity of Life for Babies ‘Made in the Holy Image of God’

President spoke at National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, says 'every soul' is a 'precious gift from heaven'

President Donald Trump championed the sanctity of life during his moving speech on Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., when he urged Americans to “build a culture that cherishes” life and unborn children “made in the holy image of God.”

“We must build a culture that cherishes dignity and sanctity of innocent human life,” Trump said. “All children, born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God. Every life is sacred, and every soul is a precious gift from heaven.”

“As the Lord says in Jeremiah, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you — before you were born, I set you apart,'” Trump said, quoting from the Bible.

The president assured the faithful at the annual event that his administration would always defend pro-life values.

He also acknowledged that “many of our greatest strides” as a nation “have been led by people of faith and started in prayer.”

Trump’s speech came two days after he delivered his State of the Union (SOTU) address before Congress and the nation. During his address, the president rebuked Democrats for supporting late-term abortion bills and called out embattled Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) disturbing defense of the legislation.

The president also urged Congress during the State of the Union to pass a bill banning late-term abortion.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) — who did not cheer Trump’s defense of the unborn during his SOTU address — was also present at the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton.

“Today and every day, let us pray for the future of our country, let us pray for courage to pursue justice, and wisdom to forge peace,” Trump said. “[Let us] come together for people, the strength of families, the safety of citizens, fulfillment of deepest hopes and highest potential, and let us always give thanks for the miracle of life, creation, and the grace of God.”

Trump also made a nod to Chad and Melissa Buck from Michigan, who adopted five children with special needs.

The Bucks attended the National Prayer Breakfast as Trump’s guests.

The president told the couple, “Thank you for inspiring us all.”

“My administration is working to ensure that faith-based adoption agencies are able to help vulnerable children find their forever families while following their deeply held beliefs,” Trump said.

The Bucks adopted their children through the St. Vincent Catholic Charities adoption agency, in partnership with the state of Michigan. St Vincent’s ministry is in crisis, however, because the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is fighting to end that partnership.

“I came to Washington today because I want to ensure that the needs of vulnerable children are put first,” Melissa Buck said in a statement on Thursday.

“My children suffered abuse, hunger, and neglect, but today they have a family and are thriving thanks to St. Vincent supporting us every step of our journey.”

“If we want other children to have a chance for a home and a future, we need more agencies like St. Vincent — not fewer,” Melissa Buck added.
