Trump Jr. Mocks Cohen, Says He ‘Lied Under Oath’ About Not Wanting White House Job

President's sons — even CNN's Dana Bash and Jake Tapper — threw cold water on former lawyer's credibility

Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump — and even two CNN anchors — all slammed former attorney Michael Cohen and accused him on Wednesday of blatantly lying under oath to Congress about whether or not he sought a job in President Donald Trump’s administration.

Cohen was one of the president’s personal lawyers. He testified publicly before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Wednesday — the same day the president began his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam.

Cohen found himself in special counsel Robert Mueller’s crosshairs as part of the investigation into allegations of collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russia.

Trump’s former lawyer claimed the president directed him to violate federal campaign finance laws to influence the 2016 presidential election by making hush-money payments to two women who claimed they had affairs with Trump. The president denies those allegations.

Cohen pleaded guilty to charges of lying to Congress about his business dealings with Russia and the Trump Organization during the presidential campaign. His prison sentence begins in May; he was sentenced in December 2018 to three years behind bars.

During the hearing, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asked Cohen whether he ever wanted to work in the White House or sought a position there.

Cohen rejected those notions, insisting he was “extremely proud to be personal attorney to the president of the United States of America.”

“I did not want to go to the White House,” Cohen claimed. “I was offered jobs. I can tell you a story of Mr. Trump reaming out [former White House Chief of Staff] Reince Priebus because I had not taken a job where Mr. Trump wanted me to, which was working with [former White House counsel] Don McGahn at the White House general counsel.”

But it didn’t take long for Trump Jr. (above right) and others to dispute Cohen’s claims.

“I bet there are dozens of people that would swear under oath that this is a lie. Including me,” Trump Jr. tweeted with a Breitbart article called, “Michael Cohen Claims He Did Not Want White House Job.”

Trump Jr. added, “Don’t forget #cohen also lied under oath about three times saying he wasn’t interested in a role in the administration. In truth, he actively lobbied anyone that would listen for the chief of staff role or anything else. Plenty of reporters know it. He can’t help but perjure himself.”

Indeed, CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper admitted on Wednesday that their outlet’s own reporting conflicted with Cohen’s claims.

“The one potential problem that I thought Michael Cohen has is when he was asked if he wanted a job in the White House, and he said no,” Bash said Wednesday on the network. “Our reporting — I know, Pam, you have been told and I have been told, all of us, by people in and around the process real-time — [is that] he very much wanted a job in the White House.”

“So if Michael Cohen and the president really wanted it to happen, more importantly the president, it would have happened and he wanted it,” Bash added.

Tapper agreed, saying, “I think the issue there is that one sentence: ‘I did not want to go to the White House.’ All of our reporting suggests that’s not true.”

Eric Trump also bashed Michael Cohen for claiming he didn’t want or seek a job in the White House.

“Michael was lobbying EVERYONE to be ‘chief of staff.’ It was the biggest joke in the campaign and around the office. Did he just perjure himself again?” Eric Trump tweeted.
