Trump Calls Out Reporter for Wearing Hat

The tension between President Trump and the media is, many times, over-hyped.

Sure, the press will get on Trump’s nerves by reporting on fake news. But the President has had a good rapport with the media since at least the 1980s when he was an up-and-coming real-estate developer in New York City.

In a lot of his interactions with the media, it’s clear that Trump knows his way around the block, so to speak, and can manipulate journalists to spread the type of message he wants. Additionally, his familiarity with the press lets him address reporters in a casual and playful fashion.

Earlier today, Trump held a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May. During the conference, Trump took a nice swipe at CNN, repeating his famous refrain of labeling the network “fake news.” (RELATED: Trump Refuses To Take Question from CNN at Theresa May Presser.)

Trump also cracked a good joke with a Reuters reporter, whom he’s clearly familiar with. Take a look:

Trump really is a mensch. He likes to cut it up and have a good time.

And Mason was more than willing to play along, obliging Trump’s demand. You can tell that Trump meant well with his request. And he’s right: Mason doesn’t look bad for a bald man. Unlike some other reporters, he clearly cares about his appearance. I can’t say the same for guys like Glenn Thrush of the New York Times or Dave Weigel of The Washington Post. See what I mean? Here’s Thrush in his patented fedora:

Here’s Weigel’s usual sweaty self:

These are men who don’t care about their appearance. They’re reporters whom Trump would rarely pick on because it would be punching down way too far. Plus, given their anti-Trump animus, they’d probably try to spin Trump’s criticism into some kind of lawsuit.

Trump likes to poke fun at guys who like a good laugh and don’t take themselves too seriously. That showed in his joke-filled exchange with Mason. He took it all in stride. And while Trump may have preferred him without it, Mason’s hat was a good compliment to his wardrobe. It indicates that Trump only jokes with men who respect themselves enough to look proper in public.

Most journalists can’t say that.
