For conservatives, the 2024 presidential race might be heating up already.

In a straw poll taken at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver on Saturday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis actually beat former President Donald Trump.

Is a changing of the guard in the air?

Gov. DeSantis Barely Edged Out Trump In Conservative Poll

Attendees of the conference were asked to vote for all the potential candidates they approve of out of a 31-person field.

The results? 74 percent surveyed favored DeSantis, while 71 percent backed Trump.

DeSantis has become a rock star on the right over the last few years.

His response to the COVID-19 global pandemic was mocked by the media and Democrats at large due to the governor’s refusal to implement harsh lockdowns, yet in retrospect Florida had one of the healthiest coronavirus recoveries compared to new York and other states that adopted harsh restrictions.

Gov. DeSantis has also pursued a bold conservative agenda in his state, taking on Big Tech censorship, tackling trans women competing in women’s sports, and banning Critical Race Theory being taught in schools.

While Trump and DeSantis were only three points apart, there was a large distance between them and the third-place finisher, Sen. Ted Cruz.

Cruz came in behind DeSantis and Trump with 42 percent.

After Cruz, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo received 40 percent, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott got 37 percent, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton nearly tied, with about 30 percent each.

Other Runner-Ups Include Rand Paul, Trump Jr.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul got 29 percent, followed by Donald Trump Jr. at 25 percent and former Vice President Mike Pence got 21 percent.

A handful of Republicans who some speculate could be potential future presidential candidates didn’t finish in the top 10, including Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Of course, wherever conservatives gather, the far left lashes out in violence.

Such was the case on Saturday, as members of the far left group Antifa harassed conference attendees and then some.

“Physical brawling breaks out in front of the Western Conservative Summit at a Denver Hyatt after members of Antifa threatened to break my phone for reporting on their protest,” reported the Washington Examiner’s Tiana Lowe.
