President Donald Trump will officially speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition convention in North West Washington, D.C. exactly as fired FBI Director James Comey testifies during the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday.
It will take place at 11:30 A.M. Eastern Time at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, and The Political Insider will be reporting from the venue live.
Trump has yet to replace Comey as FBI Director, after dismissing Comey from his job. The main reason given for firing Comey was the mis-handling of Hillary Clinton’s criminal email scandal.
The Faith and Freedom Coalition is run by Ralph Reed, who is one of Trump’s top defenders in the religious community.
As Trump’s spiritual adviser Paula White said, the president has “a heart for God, a hunger for God.”
This is a big deal:
Trump fired the FBI director in a dramatic move last month that has led to charges that the White House was seeking to influence an FBI probe into alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
The firing led the Justice Department to name a special prosecutor for its investigation into Russian election interference.The public on Thursday could hear for the first time the the degree to which Comey thought the White House was trying to influence the FBI probe.
Trump has received a warm welcome from the “Road to Majority Conference” in the past. He has spoken at length about his faith there, and Faith & Freedom Coalition president Ralph Reed is one of Trump’s staunchest defenders in the religious community.
Vice President Pence, White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will also address the gathering.
Democrats are in for serious trouble during the Comey hearing, as even if everything in the supposed “smoking gun memo” is true, it doesn’t legally constitute obstruction of justice. Democrats are desperate for Comey to give them ammunition to trigger impeachment proceedings, but that’s quite unlikely to happen.
