Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Resigns After Capitol Violence

On Thursday, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos gave her letter of resignation to President Donald Trump, telling him that his actions on Wednesday were the reason his supporters stormed the Capitol.

“We should be highlighting and celebrating your Administration’s many accomplishments on behalf of the American people,” DeVos wrote in her letter.

“Instead, we are left to clean up the mess caused by violent protestors overrunning the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to undermine the people’s business.,” DeVos wrote.

DeVos: ‘Impressionable Children Are Watching All Of This’

She added, “That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me.”

The high profile Trump Cabinet member noted that Wednesday’s events were an awful example to children.

DeVos wrote, “Impressionable children are watching all of this, and they are learning from us.”

‘Today I Resign From My Position, Effective Friday, January 8’

“I believe we each have a moral obligation to exercise good judgement and model the behavior we hope they emulate,” she continued.

“They must know from us that America is greater than what transpired yesterday.”

Then she announced she would be leaving her position on Friday.

“To that end, today I resign from my position, effective Friday, January 8, in support of the oath I took to our Constitution, our people, and our freedoms,” DeVos wrote.

DeVos’ family are also major Republican donors, having given roughly $200 million to Republican candidates.

DeVos’ departure comes in the wake of others in the Trump administration.

More Trump Cabinet Resignations

The Political Insider reported Thursday, “Former Attorney General William Barr, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, and others associated with the Trump administration have condemned the President and resigned over the events that took place yesterday at the Capitol.”

Barr called Trump actions and rhetorics on Wednesday, which many blame for inciting the riots, a “betrayal of his office and supporters.”

On Thursday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao resigned after the protest the rally, saying that the actions of Trump supporters had “deeply troubled her.”

Other Trump administration resignations included Stephanie Grisham, First Lady Melania Trump’s Chief of Staff and Mick Mulvaney, a former acting Chief of Staff and now U.S. special envoy to Northern Ireland.
