Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Republicans to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell from his leadership role “immediately,” saying he is little more than “a pawn for the Democrats.”
Trump issued a statement to his followers which he posted to the Truth Social media platform.
The statement accompanied a story by The Federalist claiming McConnell and his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao under Trump, “spent decades getting rich on China.”
“The Democrats have Mitch McConnell and his lovely wife, Elaine ‘Coco’ Chao, over a barrel,” Trump claimed.
“He and she will never be prosecuted, as per the last paragraphs of this story, as long as he continues to give the Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND.”
The Department of Transportation inspector general previously found that Chao utilized her department staff for matters related to a family business with connections to China.
In his statement, former President Trump proceeded to call for Mitch McConnell’s ouster.
“Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want. He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done,” Trump insisted.
“A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!”
Earlier this week, Trump called Mitch McConnell a “broken down hack politician” while describing Chao as his “crazy” wife.
When pressed by reporters to respond to Trump’s attacks, McConnell simply said: “no.”
The latest iteration of the Trump/Mitch McConnell feud stems from the fact that the Senate GOP leader – a man who is supposed to prop up Republican candidates in the hopes of getting them elected – claimed some politicians supported by the former President suffer from a “candidate quality” problem.
“I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate. Senate races are just different — they’re statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome,” McConnell claimed.
Trump has previously called for McConnell’s ouster from leadership, referring to him as a “broken old crow.”
Polls from a little over a year ago have shown a vast majority of GOP voters want to see Trump play a big role in the future of the party and a supermajority of them want their legislators to be more like the former President and less like establishment politicians like McConnell.
