After weeks of speculation that Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) may be President Donald Trump’s new choice to run the FBI, we’re now getting top media outlets confirming Gowdy will instead run the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The reports claim Gowdy, who did not run for the position, will be selected by fellow members of the House due to his leadership abilities shown during investigations into Obama White House scandals, including Benghazi and Fast and Furious.
The committee, with broad subpoena powers, is tasked with rooting out government corruption and exposing it. Now, it looks like Gowdy will play a key role in helping President Trump drain the Washington, D.C. swamp!
As USA Today reports:
The Republican Steering Committee — which is made up of Republican leadership and other representatives — will meet this week to choose a replacement for Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who has announced he will retire from Congress on June 30th.
Gowdy represents an attempt at compromise. The upstart conservative Freedom Caucus wanted one of their own for the job, but the group has been a thorn in the side of party leadership, and nearly killed Speaker Paul Ryan’s Affordable Care Act repeal bill. Gowdy is one of the few non-Freedom Caucus lawmakers that members of the group will endorse for the chairmanship.
Gowdy is closely aligned with Republican leadership, but has also earned the respect of members of the GOP’s far right. Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, a Freedom Caucus member, said Gowdy “is tried, tested and exactly what the committee needs at this time.”
This isn’t the first time Gowdy has been put up for a position he didn’t seek. Gowdy chaired the special committee to investigate the terrorist attack in Benghazi in 2012 and recently was named a top Republican in the House Intelligence Committee’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
In addition to Oversight and Intelligence, Gowdy sits on the Judiciary Committee, which puts him on the House committees investigating Russian meddling in the presidential election. His name recently was on the short list to replace former FBI Director James Comey, whose firing last month is already a key element of the probe.
Gowdy, as a former undefeated prosecutor, knows the law well and can get answers where others can’t. Here’s a classic example of Gowdy in action:

"overnight" committee?
I'm so thankful and I pray for him to be strengthened for this task. We The People have a right to know the truth of each and every matter that concerns our government. There seems to exist private agendas that believe the end justifies the means and that belief is not acceptable in this land of the free and home of the brave. There should never be a reason for cover ups. This nation has come a long way in the ability to become truly transparent when it comes to our government and representatives. I think the silent majority are realizing we have to be engaged in our Democratic Republic or we will be giving it up to corruption and ruin. Whoever is unmasking and exposing government dealings and classified information, though it has posed some danger to people serving in our millitary and secret service, and given our sworn enemies reason to broadcast our corrupt government officials, have done us a favor though we don't appreciate any damage to privacy it has caused. It has been a "wake up call" for those who really love and care about our Nation. We should know and understand and expose the underlying agendas which may deviate from the principles of The Constitution and work toward ending and exposing corruption in our government. (Not to mention the need to get our runaway spending under control) I believe the vast majority of our diverse legal citizens know how important it is to "not spend what you don't have" and manage our households wisely,....or at least, their goal is to get to that point in their own lives. We do not need to cowtow to foreign interests or personal financial gains for representatives through government manipulations by parties who's real goal it is to pad their own pockets. This applies to both sides of the isle! Illegal people residing in our nation should not be used as political pawns or given a voice in our Governmetal decisions. Personal social issues should not be forced upon the majority of citizens in this country by unelected official with personal agendas without the majority of our citizens consent. I'm thankful more citizens are waking up to the reality of government run amuk and care to correct that. Thank you Trey Gowdy for you and your family's personal sacrifice in perservering to bring truth and facts to light. I appreciate you so very much! We need so many more "straight shooters" to represent us in the halls of government.
I think it's GREAT, unless he has some unforeseen "dirt" in his closet. Now days you can't put your trust in any Washington political figure, who is a career politician. They are politicians because they LUST for power over the people. To give any individual that much power, unless they are oriented times three, is to take a huge risk.
