With Democrats and the liberal media have a habit of politicizing tragedies even before the bodies have been identified, it’s good to see a fair dose of common-sense commentary about the horrific shooting in Florida.
Trey Gowdy, the congressman from South Carolina, spoke of the terrible mass shooting in Parkland on Valentine’s Day. Rather than paint the opposition party as having blood on their hands and calling them complicit in the murders, Gowdy spoke with measured reason and logic.
Fox News host Bill Hemmer questioned Gowdy about the tragedy, asking, “what do you tell Americans who think Congress does not act, be it on mental health or guns or pick your topic?”
“Well the first thing I would say to — to this generation of children is how sorry I am,” Gowdy replied. “You have witnessed school shootings and mall shootings, concert shootings. There is no place that seems safe in our society.”
But he added that every side of the political spectrum wants to stop mass murders like those committed in Florida.
“I don’t know anyone who would not pass a bill today that would prevent the next mass shooting,” he said.
Gowdy, however, added that there needs to be proof that the current laws are actually being enforced before we just start infringing on people’s rights left and right.

Gowdy pointed out that under the Obama Administration, prosecutions for illegally owned or accessed guns consistently declined.
“You got to find out whether or not there was a data point at some point in his background where someone could have reported it,” the GOP congressman insisted. “Whether or not he accessed the gun legally or illegally.”
Gowdy went on …
“Usually at about this time … we hear about the gun show loophole,” he said. “Fine, close that gun show loophole. But how many mass killings have resulted from guns purchased at gun shows? So my criticism of the Obama administration was, we had an eight year decline in gun prosecutions.”

“If you can show me a law that will prevent the next mass killing, go ahead and sign me up for it,” Gowdy declared.
The South Carolina Republican has been a strong advocate of enforcing laws that already exist rather than implementing new ones.
“We already have controls on what kind of guns you can have, where you can have them, when you can use them and what individuals can possess even a single bullet,” Gowdy said after the Las Vegas massacre. “So the question to me is whether or not current controls are adequate …”
That’s the question lawmakers should be asking themselves right now. Fixing current controls are how you save the lives of children.
