The 2020 Election Proves We Need a Voter’s Bill of Rights

In the wake of the 2020 election, there has been no more polarizing figure on the right than Sidney Powell.

Powell, who was apparently once a member of the Trump campaign legal team, went on cable news and claimed she was going to “release the Kraken” when it came to evidence of fraud and election misconduct.

Powell claimed her efforts would reverse the outcome in several states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia – thereby returning President Donald Trump to office for a second term.

While Powell’s “release the Kraken” line – a line borrowed from the classic Clash of the Titans movie – was a viral sensation, it soon became clear that the Kraken, much like the mythical creature it refers to, was simple fantasy.

The Trump campaign removed Powell from their legal team and even some of Trump’s most loyal and vocal supporters began to question just how useful Powell and her claims actually were.

Indeed, in late November, Tucker Carlson, one of the President’s most reliable supporters on Fox News, blasted Powell after inviting her to come on to his show:

“We invited Sidney Powell on the show. We would have given her the whole hour,” Carlson said. “But she never sent us any evidence, despite a lot of requests, polite requests. Not a page. When we kept pressing, she got angry and told us to stop contacting her.”

Tucker’s comments immediately divided the pro-Trump right. Some on the right applauded Tucker for his willingness to speak up about Powell, but many – especially on social media – attacked Carlson and claimed that Powell would prove her case in court, not on cable news.

It’s December 23rd, and so far Powell hasn’t proven her case in court.

While she has failed at proving her case, she has succeeded in continuing to divide the pro-Trump movement – even dividing Trump’s inner circle.

Powell’s name had been floated as Special Counsel to investigate claims of electoral fraud, but eventually President Trump himself shot down the idea.

This led Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to distance Powell from Trump:

“Let me say definitively that Sidney Powell is not part of our legal team, she hasn’t been for five weeks,” Giuliani told the right-wing cable channel Newsmax on Monday.

“She is not a special counsel for the president, she does not speak for the president, nor does she speak for the administration. She speaks for herself.”

The truth is that we know there is something deeply wrong with our elections system – and that in 2020, the basic guardrails of democracy were wholly ignored in the way massive amounts of mail in ballots were distributed, received, and eventually counted.

While the mainstream media and fact-checkers insist that there is no “widespread voter fraud,” the truth is, we need a Voter’s Bill of Rights.

The focus of the pro-Trump right shouldn’t be on pushing wild and baseless conspiracy theories that only serve to feed the main stream media’s caricature of the America First movement.

Instead, we should be focused on making sure that what happened in November never, ever happens again.

To do this, we must pass a Voter’s Bill of Rights.

We need Congress to mandate that each and every state must institute policies that will guarantee that only legally registered voters are able to vote.

If that requires a Constitutional amendment, so be it.

We need to ban the bulk mailing of unrequested ballots, we need each and every voter to present identification, and we need to establish criteria for how and when ballots may be returned and how they may be counted.

We need one set of rules. Each and every legal vote in this country should count and no one should have their vote offset by an illegal vote.

Congress should pass a Voter’s Bill of Rights and require that states make these commonsense overhauls to voting regulations. If states fail to do so, they should lose federal highway dollars.

The Georgia Secretary of State didn’t steal this election with help from George Soros, and the Supreme Court isn’t going to sweep in at the last minute and change the results.

The Kraken isn’t real, and neither are these ridiculous allegations.

We need to focus on what is real – the mail in balloting process was used and abused by the Democratic Party and without these abuses Donald Trump would be getting sworn in for a second term in January.

We need to make sure this never happens again. We must pass a Voter’s Bill of Rights immediately.
