President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address smashed in the polls, 75/25 in one conducted by CBS last night.

Most importantly, 72 percent of independents approved of the speech.

While most Americans without a political allegiance approved of the speech, Trump managed to bait Democrats into showing their true colors on a number of issues. Just take stock of what Democrats didn’t clap for:

  • Lowest black and hispanic unemployment rate in history
  • Companise dishing out $1,000+ bonuses because of tax reform
  • The creation of 2.4 million jobs
  • A fully secure border – when most of them voted in favor of the Secure Fence Act of 2006.
  • Jerusalem as Israel’s capital
  • Merit based immigration

And much more. At one of the saddest moments of the night, Trump acknowledged the murders of Nisa Mickens and Kayla Cuevas, two teenage girls who were killed by MS-13 gang members in Long Island. Katie Pavlich noticed that when Trump began by talking about illegal immigrant crime, some Democrats booed, before shutting up when Trump named Mickens and Cuevas, and addressed their parents, who were present in the audience.

One Democrat was a bit more bold, however. According to Breitbart,

During MSNBC’s coverage of the State of the Union, former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe (D) stated that during his State of the Union, President Trump argued that “basically, every immigrant was a murderer or rapist,” and “brought all these people in basically, for props.”

McAuliffe said, “[H]e took this horrible turn, and basically, every immigrant was a murderer or rapist, a horrible person. I had a DREAMer, a young woman, sitting two spaces next to me. She had tears in her eyes listening to the president of the United States tonight. It was embarrassing. It did not unify the country. He brought all these people in basically, for props. Very good people, very interesting stories, but they didn’t fit into the narrative. He was just trying to get applause lines. So, I don’t know what his policy objectives were.”

Were we watching the same speech? As much as I appreciate the concern from a man who never hesitates to use gun victims as props, I certainly didn’t see Trump imply that every immigrant is a murderer and rapist, nor did I see him use anyone as a prop.

And there were a few bonus fails….

CNN’s Brian Karem attempted to correct Trump on what the national motto is. As of writing, nearly 14,000 have favorited the tweet that’s easily debunked with a simple Google search.

Senator Jeff Merkley, meanwhile, questioned whether or not Trump really cared about unity in America, because he likes the American National Anthem.

Merkley also apparently wants to run for president in 2020.

Good luck with that one.
