Senator-Elect Joni Ernst Reported for Duty Two Days After Election

If there’s anything you need to know about the character of newly elected Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, it can be summed up by her actions just days after winning election – Ernst reported for duty with the National Guard.  Ernst did so without much fanfare, which is emblematic of the kind of men and women we have serving our country in uniform.

Via the IJ Review (H/T: Weasel Zippers):

Joni Ernst was elected Iowa’s first female U.S. Senator on Tuesday and was in uniform and on duty with the Iowa National Guard on Thursday.

Lt. Col. Joni Ernst has been juggling her civilian and military lives since joining the National Guard in 1993. She is on duty every week, according to her husband Gail, who told National Review:

“Not many folks know she is in uniform on Thursday and Friday. She does it without fanfare.”

Ernst, a combat veteran in Operation Iraqi Freedom, has told the Guard she wants no special treatment, but had to re-schedule her drilling from last weekend to till after the election.[…]

Her National Guard duty made it hard on the campaign trail. She stepped away from the campaign for a week to drill over the summer.

Joni Ernst speaks for many Americans who think service, honor, and country should be top priority for every single U.S. elected official. She not only talks about it, she’s doing it.

Ernst previously gained notoriety during a debate in which she criticized the President’s foreign policy by stating, “My boots were on that ground that is now held by ISIS.”

Political blogger Kathleen McKinley announced what Ernst had done several days ago, posting that “GOP Senator-elect Joni Ernst showed up for two days of National Guard duty today.”

She added, “Because conservative women rock.”

What do you think?  Are you proud of Iowa’s newly elected Senator?

  • Re-scheduling a drill is not special treatment, but a common matter of formality! Spent many years in the Naval Reserve and this was a cpmmon activity, usually approved upon request if a valid reason was submitted! USN (RET)

Thank you for your continued service, hopefully soon we will again be a great nation!
