Sen. Rick Scott Suggests Using 25th Amendment To Remove Biden From Office Over Afghanistan

On Monday, Republican Sen. Rick Scott wondered publicly whether President Joe Biden’s Cabinet should remove him from office using a provision of the 25th Amendment, due to the ongoing chaos in Afghanistan.

Scott, the chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, tweeted, “We must confront a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of discharging the duties of his office or has time come to exercise the provisions of the 25th Amendment?”

Afghanistan Debacle

Commentators have wondered about the strange behavior of the White House in the middle of the worst national security crisis in decades. 

President Biden had left to go on vacation to Camp David as Afghanistan was crumbling, only to return to make a statement, and left without taking any questions from the press. 

He returned to Camp David, only to return to Washington again the next day. 

The U.S. war in Afghanistan has gone on for two decades, making it America’s longest war.

While GOP senators have been critical of Biden’s seeming total lack of an exit strategy in Afghanistan, Scott is the only senator to date to bring up the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment.

That constitutional amendment details the presidential order of succession.

Politico reported, “Under the 25th Amendment, which has never been used, the vice president and the majority of the president’s Cabinet would need to determine he is no longer fit for office. Congress would then need to approve that process by a two-thirds vote in both chambers.”

According to The Hill, Scott is also calling for a congressional investigation into the disaster. 

The investigation “should include reviewing advice Biden received from military and intelligence leadership, how the administration prepared for the drawdown and what advice either from within the administration or internationally Biden rejected.”

Biden actually being removed from office over his Afghanistan policies is unlikely, with Democrats maintaining control of the House, Senate and White House. 

Biden addressed the nation on Monday afternoon about turmoil that continues to unfold in Afghanistan, but did not take any questions from the press after his remarks.
