Schumer on Trump Impeachment: Does the Democrat Not Recall What He Said Earlier?

By David Kamioner | January 2, 2020

In a presidential election year, voters will put up with a lot — gaffes, scandals, petulance, the loss of primaries, and more.

But one thing American voters have short patience for is obvious hypocrisy.

As the saying in D.C. goes, “Voters expect liars. They hate hypocrites.”

What Americans are seeing right now from leaders of the Democratic Party regarding the potential trial of President Donald Trump on articles of impeachment qualifies under that category.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is adamant that any trial for Trump should not take place until every Democrat demand is met.

He also has lambasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for working with the White House on trial strategy and admitting his preference for acquittal.

However, here is then-freshman Sen. Schumer on CNN in 1999 regarding the Senate trial of then-President Bill Clinton: “We have a pre-opinion. This is not a criminal trial, but this is something that the Founding Fathers decided to put in a body that was susceptible to the whims of politics.”

Schumer has backed up the vehemence of the Democrat House caucus in prosecuting the president by using hearsay and innuendo.

He also backs the calling of numerous witnesses.

But in 1999 and during the Clinton trial, this same lawmaker said on CBS, “I wonder if the House managers aren’t a little more interested in political theater than in actually getting to the bottom of the facts. My view is we have heard from most of these witnesses over and over again. We’ve heard the same story.”

The president’s re-election campaign will have Democrat quotes like these all over every type of media in the event of a Senate trial.

With those words right out of the mouth of current Dem officeholders, they will destroy the credibility of the trial and further weaken the Democratic Party going into the November 2020 elections.

When the Democrats choose their ticket in July at their convention in Milwaukee, they will be handed a poisoned chalice made rancid by the debacle of the hypocritical Democrat message regarding any trial of the president.

Then, very sadly for them — they will meet President Donald Trump in the debates.
