The reaction from partisan pundits to President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union Address shows that people really will hear whatever they want to hear.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid, for instance, somehow saw Trump’s speech as an attempt to justify the America of the 1950s (presumably she means in terms of race issues). Her evidence for this was Trump’s use of language, specifically his mention of church, family, the military, police, and the National Anthem.

I’m at a loss for words as to how she came to that conclusion, but it really is hilarious how selective liberals are when it comes to the issues Reid listed.

Liberals will mock Trump’s references to religion for supporting it – then point to his un-Christian behavior.

Liberals will mock conservative support for the nuclear family and police, and at the same time portray any attempt to pursue budget cuts as being bad for “families” and government workers, including the police.

Liberals will criticize the nationalism of the National Anthem, but will call anyone who kneels for it a patriot.

In other words, they set up the argument so no matter what, they can’t be satisfied.

That was evident at CNN, too, where the network’s hosts couldn’t figure out why 75 percent of Americans found the speech unifying.

As Conservative Tribune reported,

During an appearance on CNN on Wednesday morning, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that she didn’t think it was anything unusual, however. Instead, she said it was part of the territory with Pelosi.

Sanders made the remarks after she was asked “how can (the president) unify that room?”

“I think doing exactly what he did last night,” Sanders said.

“And I’m going to be a little bit in disagreement with you; I think Nancy Pelosi looks like that all the time,” she continued. “I think she should smile a lot more often. I think the country would better for it.”

It wasn’t just Pelosi who needed to smile: “She seems to embody the kind of bitterness that belongs in the Democrat Party right now,” Sanders added. “They need to decide, do they love America more than they hate this president?”

That’s all it took to send CNN into a bit of a frenzy.
