Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared the nation’s capitol a “sanctuary city.” However, it now appears she was “for” thousands of illegal immigrants coming into the country before she was “against” it.

What amounts to a normal morning on the border in Texas, is now, – in the sanctuary city of D.C. – a “humanitarian crisis.”

With roughly 4,000 migrants having been bused to the city so far, Bowser is calling for help from the National Guard.

Not In My Back Yard

The open border policies of the Biden administration have had border states like Texas strained to the limit of their resources with the sheer number of migrants crossing the border daily.

In an attempt to get the attention of the federal government as to how serious the problem has become, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began earlier this year to bus illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C.

Abbott was not alone in his frustration. In November of 2021, the Biden administration was putting migrants on flights to Florida. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stated, “If they’re going to come here, we’ll provide buses. I will send them to Delaware and do that.”

Last week, Bowser sent two letters to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. In one of them, she even blamed Texas and Arizona: “The migrant crisis facing our city and our country through cruel political gamesmanship from the Governors of Texas and Arizona must be dealt with at the federal level.”

This is quite a different tone than the one the Mayor took in November 2016, curiously right after the presidential election, where she “reaffirmed” D.C.’s status as a sanctuary city:

“The values, laws, and policies of Washington, DC did not change on Election Day. We celebrate our diversity and respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status. We are a sanctuary city because we know that our neighborhoods are safer and stronger when no one is afraid to call on our government for help, and when our police can focus on protecting and serving.”

Migrants Being ‘Tricked’

Mayor Bowser recently made an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” She commented that migrants are somehow being “tricked” into getting on buses headed for Washington, D.C.

“We think they’re largely asylum seekers who are going to final destinations that are not Washington, D.C. I worked with the White House to make sure that FEMA provided a grant to a local organization that is providing services to folks. I fear that they’re being tricked into nationwide bus trips when their final destinations are places all over the United States of America.”

She also does not believe that D.C. taxpayers should have to foot the bill for processing migrants. She stated,

“Local taxpayers are not picking up the tab. They should not pick up the tab. We really need a coordinated federal response. We know that it’s done for refugees who come to the states from all points of the world and the same has to be done in the situation.”

Funny, no doubt what Texas border residents have been saying for decades.

Border Crisis Not Getting Any Better

The flow of illegal immigrants on the southern border shows no signs of a let up. The number of crossings for June alone totaled 207,416. Seizures of drug shipments were mixed, with cocaine and methamphetamine up 62% and 14% respectively. Heroin and Fentanyl seizures decreased by 49% and 41% respectively, according to the Border Patrol.

Fellow sanctuary city Mayor Eric Adams in New York City is also calling on Joe Biden to send help at the federal level. In a statement filled with an equal amount of irony and self-unawareness, Adams said, “We need some of those states that have been giving people one-way tickets — we need them to understand that this must be a partnership in this country to deal with those who are coming here seeking refuge, asylum.”

Bottom line, 4,000 in Washington D.C. is a crisis. 207,000 in Texas, not a crisis. Turns out being a sanctuary city is great…until you actually have to be one.
