After boasting over 22 million viewers and earning the reputation of the highest-rated, most-watched series of the broadcast season, ABC cancelled “Roseanne,” the 2018 revival of the 1988 sitcom, amid outrage at Roseanne Barr for her racist tweets on Tuesday about former President Barack Obama’s aide, Valerie Jarrett.
In a domino effect now toppling the hit series that once surpassed NBC’s “This Is Us” and CBS’ “Big Bang Theory” in ratings, Viacom will no longer be airing reruns of the original show on any of its networks including Paramount Network, TV Land and CMT channels, the media conglomerate announced on Tuesday, according The Wrap. Barr, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, caused outrage when she tweeted that Jarrett, who is a black American born in Iran, looked like the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” The tweets were since removed, and Barr apologized via Twitter. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a statement, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” which Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger shared.
