Richard Overton, the world’s oldest living World War II veteran, won another fight – this time against pneumonia.
Overton had been battling his ailment at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, last year, but was released just before Memorial Day.
He had been taken to the hospital just a few days earlier.

For his past birthday celebration, Overton enjoyed life the only way he knows how – with a cigar, some whiskey, and a block party with all his friends.
Yes, you heard that right – a block party!

Family members told CBS Austin on Monday they had expected Overton to be released Tuesday.
Overton was hospitalized at St. David’s Medical Center after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Overton’s family says the first thing the 111-year-old did was sit on his porch and ‘fire up’ a cigar.
You have to love this guy.
Overton served in the U.S. Army, fighting in the South Pacific between 1942 and 1945, including stops in Hawaii, Guam, Palau, and Iwo Jima.

One thing Overton had never done is visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
That all changed this past weekend after a conversation with Robert F. Smith, an African American businessman, investor, and philanthropist, whose net worth stands at $4.4 billion.
After a brief visit with Overton, Smith arranged for a trip to the museum, which included another first – traveling on a private jet.
