Tragic news this afternoon as we’re learning that Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat who represents the 7th District in Maryland, has been hospitalized.
Politico broke the story just a few minutes ago:
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) is currently hospitalized, three sources told POLITICO, the latest setback in a string of health issues that have plagued the longtime lawmaker since last year.

Cummings is a native son of Baltimore, and his congressional district encompasses much of the popular city.
Cummings’s wife, Maya Rockeymoore, is currently running for governor of Maryland. With her husband in the hospital, she has suspended her campaign indefinitely. Here’s what she wrote in a statement released earlier: “Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena. Unfortunately, due to personal considerations, I am suspending my bid for governor of Maryland.”

This isn’t the first time Rep. Cummings has had health issues. Last year, he suffered from numerous ailments related to his heart. He was initially supposed to have a heart valve replacement but complications led to him spending more time in the hospital. Politico elaborates: “It is unclear whether Cummings’ hospitalization is related to heart issues that sidelined him for months last year or is due to an unrelated health issue. Cummings’ office did not respond to multiple requests for comment other than to refer questions to Rockeymoore Cummings’ campaign.”
Cummings is one of the most outspoken opponents of President Trump in Congress. A staunch progressive, Cummings has antagonized the President since day 1 of his presidency, and once demanded, along with Senator Elizabeth Warren, an investigation into the Trump transition team. Cummings was digging for possible impropriety involved with the transition, including the misuse of taxpayers funds.

Regardless of his past actions to undermine President Trump, we should all be wishing Rep. Cummings well. Politics is no excuse to wish harm on anyone.
