Rejecting The Trump ‘America First’ Agenda, Joe Biden Recommits To Global Leadership

On Thursday, President Joe Biden explained his plan to ditch former President Donald Trump’s “America First” diplomacy and focus more on global leadership.

Biden declared, “The message I want the world to hear today is America is back.” Biden distinguished himself from his predecessor in remarks made at the State Department.

Biden Announces Plans To Reverse Trump Foreign Policy Agenda

The president claimed global challenges included authoritarianism, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the threat of nuclear weapons.

“We can’t do it alone,” Biden said, saying that he would assert America’s “global policy and global power” by reversing many of the foreign policy decisions of former President Trump.

To do that, Biden declared that America’s must be “Defending freedom. Championing opportunity. Upholding universal rights. Respecting the rule of law. And treating every person with dignity.”

Biden said Trump’s leadership put U.S values “under intense pressure. ” 

He also claimed that Trump harmed U.S. relations with Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

He said under Trump, U.S. policies with these countries reflected “neglect” and “abuse.”

The president said, “American alliances are our greatest asset and leading with diplomacy means standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies in key partners once again.”

Perhaps best exemplifying what all of this really meant, Biden said he would reverse Trump’s order to withdraw troops from Germany, where they have been stationed since the end of World War II.

Biden Claims He Will Be Tougher On Russia Than Trump

Biden’s Secretary of State Tony Blinken had also signaled that in the new administration there would be a restoration of globalism.

Blinken said, “At this moment of unprecedented global challenge, it’s more important the United States show up and lead because the world simply doesn’t organize itself to solve big problems.”

Biden also touted he would be tough with Putin, something he accused Trump of being soft on.

“I made it clear to President Putin in a manner very different from my predecessor that the days of the United States rolling over in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions interfering with our elections, cyberattacks, poisoning its citizens are over,” Biden said, calling out the Russian leader for the imprisonment and general treatment of political dissident Alexey Navalny.

Biden seemed to lighten up a bit when discussing China.

Biden: ‘It’s Going To Take Time To Rebuild What Has Been So Badly Damaged’

“We’ll confront China’s economic abuses, counter its aggressive coercive action to push back on China’s attack on human rights, intellectual property, and global governance,” Biden said.

Then Biden turned his attention to racism in America.

“We’ve taken steps to acknowledge and address systemic racism and the scourge of white supremacy in our own country,” Biden said.

On Trump’s legacy, Biden finished,  “It’s going to take time to rebuild what has been so badly damaged, but that’s precisely what we’re going to do.”

The Trump policy of America First had led to unprecedented peace deals in the Middle East, withdrawing American troops from years-long, in some cases, 20 years-long, wars that had been started by George W. Bush or Barack Obama (with Biden as VP), and renegotiated trade deals.

Already, Trump’s withdrawals from Germany and Afghanistan have been reversed, and American forces have re-entered Syria.

Biden was right. “America is back.” Right back to the foreign policy of Bush and Obama/Biden.
