President Trump is skipping the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner this year, the first time a president has done so in decades, and the reason should make every American smile.
Deputy White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, explained that rather than mingling with celebrities and the media, President Trump will be engaging with the American people.
“This is a president who campaigned on speaking directly to Americans, and that’s what he’s going to spend his time doing,” Sanders explained.
How can anyone oppose that concept?
A top White House aide explained on Sunday why President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he won’t attend this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, deputy White House press secretary, said on ABC News that Trump’s job as president isn’t to hobnob with reporters and celebrities. Instead, Trump’s job is to serve the American people, she explained.
“This wasn’t a president that was elected to spend his time with reporters and celebrities,” Huckabee Sanders said. “This is a president who campaigned on speaking directly to Americans, and that’s what he’s going to spend his time doing.”
Of course, there’s certainly a bit of gamesmanship being played here.
Trump has labeled the media as an enemy of the American people.

Top media figures responded by floating the idea that they’d boycott the WHCA.
Press should boycott altogether. Or leave when he speaks. He has zero respect for press. Why give him this platform? https://t.co/Uh5Ey1YFwo

Managing editor for opinion at U.S. News & World Report, Robert Schlesinger, said journalists should “let the ratings- and crowd-obsessed narcissist freak address an empty ballroom.”
Always a step ahead of the press however, President Trump beat them to the punch and issued his own boycott.
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!

The President appears to have his priorities straight. If only the media would also recognize that the American people come first.
