On Veterans Day in 1985, President Ronald Reagan saluted America’s heroes at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
During his speech, Reagan plotted out a path for Peace Through Strength, a concept President-elect Donald Trump has campaigned on over 30 years later.
Can this concept work with current threats to America from ISIS or other terrorists in the same way it did for Reagan and the Soviets?
“Peace fails when we forget what we stand for. It fails when we forget that our republic is based on firm principles, that with them we are the last best hope of man,” Reagan said.
“Peace is only maintained and won by those who have clear eyes and brave minds. In memory of those who gave the last full measure of devotion, may our efforts to achieve lasting peace gain strength.”

Trump channeled his inner-Reagan during the campaign season, speaking of his love for the military and promising that, if elected, he “would have a military so strong that we would never have to use it.”
He would later add a proposal to make the military so strong that our enemies would look at it and say, “No way we’re messing with that.”
