Queen Elizabeth Moves To Windsor Castle To Flee Coronavirus, Cancels All Royal Events

It has just been announced that Queen Elizabeth has officially temporarily moved to Windsor Castle in order to isolate herself from the coronavirus. In addition, all upcoming royal events have been cancelled due to the outbreak.

“As a sensible precaution and for practical reasons in the current circumstances, a number of changes are being made to The Queen’s diary,” read a statement posted on the Queen’s website today. “Audiences due to take place this week at Buckingham Palace will go ahead as planned. These include receiving the Prime Minister, the Commanding Officer of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH and the Bishop of Hereford. Future Audiences will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, in line with the appropriate advice.”

The Palace also confirmed that the 93 year-old Queen has moved to Windsor Castle “one week earlier than planned” so that she can practice social distancing there, adding that she will “likely” stay there until after the Easter period.

Events that have been cancelled include the royal family’s annual Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel, which was scheduled to take place on April 9. Three garden parties that the Queen was going to host in May have also been cancelled in light of the coronavirus.

“Guests already invited to these Garden Parties will be asked to attend in 2021. Two additional Garden Parties given for the Not Forgotten Association and the National Trust will also not take place,” the statement added. “Investitures will be rearranged to later dates.”

“Further announcements on Trooping the Colour, the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the State Visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan will be made in due course, in consultation with Government,” the statement concluded.

Given the fact that the Queen is almost 94, and her husband Prince Philip is turning 99 in June, the coronavirus is considered particularly risky for them. We applaud them for taking these precautions during this difficult time, and we hope the Queen and the rest of the royal family make it through this difficult period in good health.
