Prominent Russian Journalist Quits, Says She Fears ‘We’re On The Brink Of A Nuclear War’

Maria Baronova, a prominent Russian journalist who quit her state-TV job last week after condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, fears the world is “on the brink of a nuclear war.”

Up until last week, Baronova served as editor-in-chief of the Russian version of Russia Today, a state-run media operation also known as RT.

Her proximity to the Russian state leads her to express some rather harrowing concerns as tensions between Russia and the West rise to levels unseen in decades.

“The problem is, I know these people very well. They never send threats, they just kill, so there is kind of [a] weird silence around me, but I really think we’re on the brink of a nuclear war right now,” she said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

She added, “I’m not exaggerating.”

Russian Journalist Warns of Nuclear War

Maria Baronova, who gained fame as a prominent anti-Putin activist, quit last Tuesday after publicly declaring that she could no longer “be silent” knowing “this regime will finally turn our life into one endless hell.”

In her latest interview with Fox, she expanded upon what she believes is a grim inevitability of nuclear war with the Russian invasion of Ukraine being the catalyst.

“It seems like we’re either in North Korea or we are going to be killed by a thermonuclear mushroom,” she said.

Baronova added that she wouldn’t have quit her job if she thought her concerns of nuclear war were not valid. Though, she added, nobody knows for sure.

“I wouldn’t quit, and I wouldn’t lose my salary and job if I was sure that we are going to be alive for many years, but I really don’t know what is going to happen to all of us next,” she explained.

World War III?

Russian President Vladimir Putin, early on in the military invasion of Ukraine, ordered Russia’s “deterrence forces” – which wield nuclear weapons – on high alert.

He made that escalatory move due simply to “aggressive comments about our country.”

Where would actual aggressive action lead us?

Democrats and war-hungry Republicans have openly supported implementing a no-fly zone in Ukraine, something Senator Marco Rubio, the vice-chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, has warned would effectively mark the beginning of World War III.

“I think people need to understand what a no-fly zone means … it’s not some rule you pass that everybody has to oblige by,” Rubio warned.

“It’s the willingness to shoot down the aircrafts of the Russian Federation, which is basically the beginning of World War III.”

Americans though can rest easy knowing that if World War III breaks out and it results in a nuclear strike, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is thoroughly prepared … by advising people to maintain COVID protocols.

Ready.gov provides a series of suggestions on what one can do in the event of a nuclear attack.

“Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household,” the government website advises. “If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not a part of your household.”

While many are concerned about Putin’s mental state and the possibility he would go nuclear, Maria Baronova actually believes Russia might be the target of a retaliatory act.

“I suspect the Western world will use it,” Baronova said. “This is a very dangerous situation.”

Shortly after President Biden was sworn into office, dozens of House Democrats quietly called on him to relinquish sole control over the country’s nuclear arsenal and the ability to launch a strike using those weapons.

That movement has since stalled.
