al-Baghdadi was killed Saturday night when he blew himself up along with three children believed to be his before U.S. forces could get to him. The dog is reportedly okay and there were no U.S. casualties.

Trump announced the ISIS leader’s death in a press conference Sunday, where the dog’s role in this mission was described.

Trump Describes the Dog’s Role

“Last night, the United States brought the world’s number one terrorist leader to justice. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead,” Trump said. “He was the founder and leader of ISIS, the most ruthless and violent terror organization anywhere in the world.”

“No personnel were lost in the operation, while a large number of Baghdadi’s fighters and companions were killed with him,” Trump continued. “He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming all the way. The compound had been cleared by this time, with people either surrendering or being shot and killed.”

“He reached the end of the tunnel, as our dogs chased him down,” Trump said. “He ignited his vest, killing himself and the three children. His body was mutilated by the blast. The tunnel had caved in on it, in addition. But test results gave certain immediate and totally positive identification. It was him.”

“The thug who tried so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear, in total panic and dread, terrified of the American forces bearing down on him,” Trump declared.

The Dog Is Okay

Military officials did not comment on the dog’s actions during the raid. President Trump added that the dog received minor injuries during the mission. On Monday, Pentagon officials said that the dog returned to his or her regular duties after the mission was completed, but would not give further details.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, US Army Gen. Mark Milley, said the dog’s name would not be released since it was still in a combat zone and would not comment on its name.

News of the dog’s role in the raid made many wonder about what breed he or she might be and also the name of the animal. According to Newsweek’s James LaPorta his sources tell him the dog’s name is “Conan.”

“Conan” is reportedly a Belgian Malinois, the same breed used to take out Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, US officials also told ABC News.
