Look How This Parent Responded To A Pledge Of Allegiance Permission Slip!

Pledge Of Allegiance

A school district in Florida is sending out Pledge of Allegiance permission slips, and at least one parent is not happy at all about the decision.

The form, distributed by the Leon County School District reads: “I understand my rights as a parent and I request that my child, noted above, be excused from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his/her right hand over his heart.”

Micah Brienen, whose niece brought home one of the forms, explained that each parent or guardian is required to sign and return to confirm they received it.

He posted a picture of the form which included a response either he provided, or the parent of his niece provided.

It reads, “This is the dumbest thing I have ever read and I am so ashamed of this.”

Via Constitution.com:

In what is perhaps the latest example of the downfall of American culture and civics, one Florida public school has taken to sending a permission slip home to parents during the first week of school notifying parents that they can request for their child to not participate in the daily “Pledge of Allegiance”.

This image was shared by Micah Brienen of this past week, and it has since gone viral, reaching thousands and causing quite the stir on social media. He was understandably shocked and outraged that this was what our nation had come to …

The ability to opt out of the Pledge of Allegiance in Florida school districts has been available for quite some time. A 2010 article in the Orlando Sentinel reminds students that the courts have ruled they can opt out of the “controversial slice of American history.”

In 2016, a Florida House Committee gave school districts the option on how to notify parents of their right to pull their child from the Pledge.

Leon School District apparently chose to go with actual permission slips instead of postings throughout the school.

If parents want to opt their child out of the Pledge of Allegiance, why not give them the option by simply asking for a form? Leon Schools go far above and beyond that – if they’re requiring all parents to sign this form, they’ve essentially turned it from an opt out, into a permission slip to recite the Pledge.

Brienan explained that there “NO EXCUSE for this waiver to be sent out by public school systems.”

“It is shameful and it undermines the men and women who fought for that flag,” he added.
