Pete Buttigieg Drops Out of Presidential Race

A surprising but smart move.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who was about to have a very bad Super Tuesday, has dropped out of the Democratic race for the presidency. This is confirmed by several sources.

This leaves the middle lane to Biden, with Bloomberg and Klobuchar fighting for scraps.

For a man who virtually won the Iowa caucuses this is a sudden move. But a smart one.

He now holds his fire for the convention and sets himself up as a possible veep choice or compromise candidate if no one can claim a first ballot victory. He also now can raise and spend money, to retire campaign debt if nothing else, without the pressure of the actual race to hinder his efforts.

Given his young age, 37, he has made an impressive debut on the national stage and his campaign was certainly a good shakedown cruise. He is smart to get out while generally on top.

His endorsement will be sought by Biden, Bloomberg, and others and he also would be a serious contender for a cabinet slot if the Democrats were to win the White House.

His appeal to moderate voters would have been greatly eclipsed by Biden on Super Tuesday, especially given Biden’s new momentum after his win in South Carolina on Saturday.
