House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will reportedly announce this week that she is forming a Democrat-led select committee to investigate the Capitol protest that took place on January 6th.
The move comes weeks after Republicans blocked a “9/11-style” commission to investigate the one-time incident.
It was initially reported that Pelosi (D-CA) announced her intentions to form the select committee in a closed-door meeting, but her office insisted that was not the case.
A spokesman for the Speaker tweeted that an announcement would be forthcoming but not definitive on the end result.
“Speaker Pelosi told Members she plans to announce WHETHER she will create a select committee THIS WEEK,” the spokesman said. “Her preference continues to be a bipartisan commission which Senate Republicans are blocking.”
Still, as Politico reports, “Pelosi seemed to suggest that she would move forward with creating the committee.”
The Daily Mail reports that a select committee to investigate the Capitol protest on January 6th “does not require Republican support to establish.”
They note that “Republicans will still have some power in the process,” an idea that “has fueled anxiety among some Democrats that firebrand lawmakers such as Jim Jordan … could take on the number two spot and use it to undermine the committee’s work.”
In an interview with The Grio, Pelosi claimed she still holds out hope for a “bipartisan, nonpartisan commission” but lamented, “Republicans won’t go for that.”
In that interview, the Democrat indicates she will move forward with the partisan select committee.
“We’ll go for a select committee to determine the truth of what happened that day,” she said.
“And the truth means … How was it, how did it start, what are the causes of it in terms of the attitude of the American people? But then, more particularly, how is it financed, who started all of this? The public has a right to know,” insisted Pelosi.
News of Pelosi possibly moving forward with a select committee to investigate the Capitol protest is more proof that the Democrat Party has every intention of dragging out the one-time incident as long as they possibly can to score cheap political points with their base.
They want a 9/11-style investigation because Trump supporters, in their view, committed an act on par with that event.
Representative James Clyburn urged Pelosi to create a select committee after Republicans blocked the commission.
“Pelosi, as speaker of the House, should move forward, either empower certain committees to do it or create a select committee, as she did with the coronavirus, to get to the bottom of it,” Clyburn said, though he admitted such a committee would be highly partisan.
After an entire spring and summer of leftist-fueled race riots went unanalyzed, Democrats like Clyburn and Pelosi suddenly have an interest in creating a select committee to look into a one-time event that got out of hand on January 6th.
They do so using false narratives and insinuations that have already fallen apart.
USA Today reported back in January that federal authorities admitted there was “no direct evidence of kill and capture teams” among those involved in the Capitol protests.
“Right now, we don’t have any direct evidence of kill/capture teams,” U.S. Attorney for D.C. Michael Sherwin told reporters.
Still, that hasn’t stopped some Democrats from playing up the incident to rile up their base.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims she was almost murdered on January 6th and admits she is in therapy because of it.
President Biden declared the events to be “the greatest assault since the Civil War on the Capitol.”
If Pelosi does move forward with a select committee, one would hope Jordan and his Republican colleagues can investigate how the Democrats have used a false melodramatic narrative to portray all supporters of President Trump as ‘insurrectionists.’
