How often have you heard this? “Nobody wants to take your guns, we just want common sense regulation.”
Perhaps those saying that legitimately believe what they’re saying – it’s their ignorance of firearms that causes them to support regulations that would, in fact, require the overwhelming majority of firearms in existence to be banned. And what’s the next logical step after they’re banned? That they’ll be confiscated.
“We’re not trying to take your guns, we are trying to live,” said Parkland survivor David Hogg.
In response to an NRATV video saying that “the truth is, they [the left] want to ban every gun in America,” Parkland survivor Jaclyn Corin replied, “The truth is, we want to ban guns that can fire 160 rounds in 7 minutes.” That’s one round every 2.6 seconds, so in other words, all of them.
“We’re not saying ‘no guns.’ We are saying we want to regulate semi-automatic weapons and the accessories that make them fully automatic because fully automatic weapons are banned,” said survivor Emma Gonzalez during an appearance on Ellen. I think this may be the first time I’ve seen a liberal successfully differentiate between semi and fully automatic weapons.
And yet after the shooting at a Waffle House during Sunday morning in Tennessee, Gonzalez changed her tone, effectively calling for all guns to be banned, as she called for the banning of semi-automatic weapons as well.

(4/4) Removing the assault and semi-automatic weapons from our Civilian society, instituting thorough background checks and mandatory waiting periods (and raising the buying age and banning the production of high-capacity magazines) are the ways to stop shootings in America.

She then repeated another common myth, that America is somehow the only country with mass public shootings. “The FBI defines a mass shooting as 4 people killed (not including the shooter). But it’s not even remotely true. The worst mass shootings have occurred in other countries.

And you have to remember, the United States is one of the world’s most populous nations. When you adjust for population though, the U.S. isn’t #1 in the frequency of mass public shootings, or the number of mass shooting deaths per capita.
And what of the worst of the worst mass shootings? If we look at those where more than 15 are killed from 1970 to 2018, Europe and India/Pakistan have fewer mass shootings per capita, but Africa, Australia, and Israel have more. Though Israel should be treated as an outlier, because of the heightened threat of terrorism there.
