Over 200 Native Americans Sign Letter Demanding Elizabeth Warren Formally Retract Heritage Claims

Over 200 Cherokee and Native Americans have published a letter demanding presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren formally retract previous false claims of Native American ancestry.

The letter suggests that her lies have led to other dubious claims of ancestry by non-Natives. And it and demands Warren “fully address the harm” she has caused.

“Your actions do not exist in a vacuum but are part of a long and violent history,” the letter claims. The group points to a Los Angeles Times report which revealed hundreds of millions in federal contracts reserved for minorities have been diverted to others with specious claims to Native tribes.

The group accuses Warren of being “the most public example of this behavior,” and suggests she needs “to clearly state that Native people are the sole authority on who is — and who is not — Native.”

Fauxcahontas’ Problem

Elizabeth Warren repeatedly lied about her heritage from identifying as a Native American law professor at Harvard to her claiming that she was “American Indian” on her Texas Bar card.

The false claim was used to propel her career as a minority.

Politico reported in 2012 that Warren “listed herself as a minority law teacher for nearly a decade from 1986 to 1995.”

A Harvard Crimson piece in 1996 described her as Native American, while a Fordham Law Review article in 1997 even described her specifically as a “woman of color.”

On a registration form for the State Bar of Texas, Warren described herself as “American Indian.”

For decades, she did nothing to correct the claims and in fact, used them to her advantage time and again.

Despite her more recent attempts to clean up the mess she created for herself due to a presidential campaign, the Native Americans who wrote the letter note that Warren’s apologies have been “vague and inadequate.”

Original Rachel Dolezal

In an extremely awkward radio interview last May, Charlamagne Tha God slammed Elizabeth Warren for claiming Native American ancestry, dubbing her “the original Rachel Dolezal.”

President Trump has consistently cracked jokes about the false claim.

Instead of addressing the situation when others first reported that her family stories of Native American ancestry were not accurate, she let the claims sit, making it so much harder to quell the outrage when she finally admitted the truth.

Here she is, deep into a presidential campaign, still fighting off outrage from actual Native Americans. What a mess.
