Our Biggest Faith Challenge for the New Year

By Kimberly Faith | January 1, 2020

In Christian circles, the word “secular humanism” is often used to distinguish believers in God from those who have no belief in the spiritual world.

However, there is a huge sector of the Christian population that espouses faith in God — yet lives practically unaffected by it.

Faith in God, in other words, has little impact upon their choices regarding friendships, career, spouse, or finances.

Rather, the dominating factor for each choice is the individual’s present personal satisfaction, also known as “happiness.”

This secularization of our faith is a dangerous way to live.

When our faith is secularized, it is no longer the foundation for all of our important life choices. So our faith is like very thin ice that will shatter under the weight of trouble.

The thinner our faith, the less it takes to break it.

This should scare us enough to make us evaluate to what degree our faith is actually impacting our life choices.

For our faith to be our strong foundation, we must have such a powerful love for God that we find our deepest peace and greatest value in our relationship with Him.

When we possess this relationship, we don’t want to make any life decisions without Him.

Our faith isn’t just one more choice along with relationships and career; rather, it is the rock upon which everything worthwhile in our life is built.

Despite the pop culture narrative that all that matters is “the here and now,” God’s narrative for us is wedded in the concept that we were created for something eternal. Deep down, we know it’s true.

Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew‬ 6:19-21‬).

When God is the greatest treasure of our heart, our faith in Him is greater than our faith in anything else. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
