Officials Thwart Man Who Planned to Blow Himself Up In D.C. On Election Day

A New York man was arrested for building a massive bomb he planned to use to blow himself up on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Election Day.

Paul Rosenfeld, a 56-year-old from Rockland County, sent letters to a reporter in August and September outlining his planned terror attack.

Authorities were notified and Rosenfeld was pulled over while he was driving, where FBI agents say he confessed to the plot, described the materials used, and specifically noted how the device was designed to assure his own death.

It wouldn’t have just been his own life he took had the plot gone off without a hitch. When investigators searched Rosenfeld’s home they discovered a bomb weighing in at 200 pounds.

“Had he been successful, Rosenfeld’s alleged plot could have claimed the lives of innocent bystanders and caused untold destruction,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney said.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which innocent bystanders would have been harmed, making it difficult to determine his intentions. The fact that it was planned to occur on Election Day means it was surely intended to create havoc with our voting institutions.

Indeed, the direction Rosenfeld was angry about seems to relate to lawmakers who are chosen by the voting process itself.

Court documents reveal he sought to promote the political concept of “sortition,” a plan that chooses legislators randomly out of a pool of eligible voters.

Rosenfeld has been charged with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, both of which carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Now, why would a seemingly average man decide that in today’s political climate, the best way to address the ‘country’s political direction’ is to resort to violence?

While there’s no evidence to connect him, the uptick in violent rhetoric coming out of the left – like those voiced by Maxine WatersCory BookerHillary Clinton, and most recently, Eric Holder, is cause for serious concern. Democrats have told their followers to “hunt Republicans.” Famous liberal actors threaten the President’s son.

It’s truly a mystery for now. Except for the fact that the left has cornered the market on violent hate speech.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the victim of an assassination attempt by an unhinged leftist, took Democrats to task for stirring trouble.

“When Democratic leaders like Eric Holder call for violence, that is a direct threat to our democracy,” Scalise wrote in an op-ed. “I hope he and others think long and hard about the world they are creating and the impact they are leaving on this country.”

With each act, the threat escalates time and again. At some point, some plot will go unnoticed until it’s too late.
