6.5 Million Americans Chose to Pay a Fine Instead of Buying Obamacare

All Obamacare repeal attempts have failed under the Trump Administration as Republicans have caved to Leftist fear-mongering.

“Millions will lose access to healthcare” we’re told, as if it’s impossible to access healthcare without insurance. Given that the average deductible under Obamacare is around $6,000, it goes without saying that what Obamacare beneficiaries really had was glorified catastrophic insurance.

Even though we’re told that millions will “lose” coverage in absence of ObamaCare, anyone who deep dives into the numbers will find that 73 percent of those who will “lose” coverage in absence of ObamaCare will only “lose” it because they’ll voluntarily cease to buy it. As you may know, at the heart of ObamaCare is the “individual mandate,” which is a fine on those who refuse to purchase health insurance. The fine currently is the higher of 2.5% of income, or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child (with a maximum fine of $2,085 allowed in the latter scenario).

And just to prove how unpopular Obamacare is – get a load of how many people would rather pay that fine than receive insurance.

The individual healthcare mandate requires every American to buy health insurance or pay a fine. In 2016, 6.5 million Americans chose to pay the fine rather than sign up for insurance on the Obamacare exchanges.

The mandate has always been the most unpopular part of President Obama’s healthcare law, officially known as the Affordable Care Act. In addition to those who pay the fine rather than buy the mandated levels of insurance, 15 million people would drop their Obamacare coverage if it were legal to do so.

This does not necessarily mean that these individuals want to go without insurance. Obamacare requires every insurance policy to cover a set of what it defines as Essential Health Benefits. The more benefits that a plan covers, the more expensive it is. Some people might prefer to buy less comprehensive insurance at a lower cost. For example, one option might be to buy insurance only for major healthcare costs such as surgeries or hospitalizations.

Obamacare – so great that 6.5 million Americans would rather pay a fine than be “helped” by it.
