During a speech at a private dinner on Friday, former President Barack Obama gave the Democratic Party a warning that was particularly aimed at the 2020 presidential candidates–don’t become too extreme.
Obama told a room of liberal voters that the average American doesn’t want a “revolution” or to “tear down the system.”

“My point is that even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision, we also have to be rooted in reality and the fact that voters, including Democratic voters and certainly persuadable independents or even moderate Republicans, are not driven by the same views that are reflected on certain, you know, left-leaning Twitter feeds or the activist wing of our party,” Obama said.
Barack Obama on Friday urged Democrats running for the White House not to lurch too far left in their pursuit of the nomination, while at the same time seeking to quell concerns in the party about its 2020 hopefuls and the messy primary season to come. https://t.co/Z3pWbRTS0I

“This is still a country that is less revolutionary than it is interested in improvement. They like seeing things improved. But the average American doesn’t think that we have to completely tear down the system and remake it. And I think it’s important for us not to lose sight of that,” the former president added.
“They just don’t want to see crazy stuff,” Obama insisted.

Many liberals were not happy, especially supporters of diehard progressive candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Both are campaigning on Medicare for all, free college for all, and a huge tax increase on wealthy Americans.
Liberals went after Obama on social media, adding the hashtag #TooFarLeft.
“I’m #TooFarLeft because I want kids to be safe in school. I’m #TooFarLeft because I want people to live in dignity. I’m #TooFarLeft because I seek justice and equality. I’m #TooFarLeft because I think healthcare and housing are human rights,” former Hillary Clinton adviser Peter Daou tweeted.
CONFESSION: I'm Too Far Left™
I'm #TooFarLeft because I want kids to be safe in school.
I'm #TooFarLeft because I want people to live in dignity.
I'm #TooFarLeft because I seek justice and equality.
I'm #TooFarLeft because I think healthcare and housing are human rights.

Of course ‘Squad’ member Rep. Ilhan Omar jumped in.
If being #TooFarLeft means believing:
✅ Healthcare is a human right
✅ Future generations should live on a healthy planet
✅ All student debt should be cancelled
✅ The minimum wage should be $15
✅ Lives depend on gun reform
✅ Families don’t belong in cagesCount me in! 💪🏽

Still, Obama is right: If Democrats lose in 2020, perceptions that their party has become too far left will no doubt have a lot to do with that loss.
So maybe it’s a good thing if Democrats don’t take Barack Obama’s advice!
