It has not been an easy week for the former vice president, for a whole range of reasons.
And he hasn’t helped himself this weekend, either.
The 2020 Democratic candidate — whose campaign is still reeling from the pummeling he took from Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the Thursday primary debate in Miami, Florida — tried to explain the gains the United States has made in terms of its treatment of those in the LGBTQ community.
He appeared at a private fundraiser in Seattle over the weekend — and stumbled into another gaffe.
Just five years ago, declared Biden, it would have been acceptable in America for a businessman to make “fun of a gay waiter,” as the Washington Examiner reported of the awkward incident.
But those who were present at the event — namely, a group of wealthy donors — pushed back hard on that statement of Biden and some actually jeered the former vice president, according to reports.
Some members of the audience yelled back to Biden, “Not in Seattle!”
“The point of Biden’s remarks, delivered as the LGBT community and their allies celebrated Pride Weekend, was that the United States has made progress,” Fox News noted of the incident. “He said the hypothetical businessman he spoke of ‘would not be invited back’ today.”
But members of the audience did not buy that premise of Biden’s — and said such public displays of homophobia as described by Biden indeed would have been met with objections in 2014.
The larger point is this: What’s going on with this candidate — and should he still be in the race?
One of Biden’s top fundraisers recently withdrew his support for the former vice president’s campaign, CNBC reported on Friday.
“Tom McInerney, a veteran San Francisco-based lawyer, informed Biden’s team on June 20 that he can no longer help him raise campaign cash to compete in the 2020 presidential election,” the outlet noted.
“I had actually let the campaign know I’d pulled back my support of Biden for now,” McInerney told CNBC.
“I don’t think he did well last night,” he added, commenting on Biden’s performance at the Thursday night debate.
