North Korea Wants U.S. Investment, McDonalds

North Korea McDonalds

Yesterday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said at a cabinet meeting that “President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only harmony.”

Those comments came after a historic meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un in the demilitarized zone. Kim became the first North Korean leader to step into South Korea since fighting ended in the Korean War in 1953, and Jae-in stepped into North Korea as well.

In another historic move, while North Korea has been closed off from the outside world, the starving nation is now showing an appetite for foreign investment.

According to Business Insider:

During a dinner that followed the historic summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, North Korean officials indicated the regime wants to modernize its economy, in order to become “a normal country,” according to a South Korean official who attended the event. “They want to be a normal country, a normal state to be recognized by the United States,” Chung-in Moon, a special adviser to President Moon, said during a CNN International interview.

Chung-in referenced Trump Tower and McDonald’s as examples of what one might consider being “modern” for North Korea.

Of course, despite whatever sudden change in enthusiasm for opening up to the outside world (if it’s for real), inviting in a McDonalds or any other foreign franchise isn’t possible for North Korea, due to the litany of economic sanctions imposed against the regime. And any U.S. investment in North Korea would almost certainly require that the sanctions be lifted first.

Trump has continuously imposed sanctions on North Korea, especially as they continued missile tests, which the rogue nation has suddenly vowed to end. It’s almost impossible that a sudden “about face” will reverse those sanctions.

Regardless, it is interesting to see such an abrupt attitude shift from North Korea.
