Newt Gingrich on Ocasio-Cortez: She’s ‘Viciously Dishonest’ About Border Issues

Former speaker of the House on Wednesday morning called out some of the most outrageous political stunts of late

Speaking forcefully this morning on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” program, Newt Gingrich called out the over-the-top political stunts conducted recently by Democratic members of Congress over the conditions for illegal immigrants at the southern border facilities.

Mentioning Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) specifically, the former speaker of the House said that the progressive lawmaker was being “viciously dishonest” about her visit to border detention facilities and what she claims she saw there during her experience this weekend.

“You have, with AOC, somebody [who is] viciously dishonest, and by viciously, I mean there were 99 Democrats who voted against humanitarian aid [for people showing up at the border] … You now have over 100,000 people a month coming [to the southern border] … People like AOC create the disaster, refuse to fix it, vote against the funding to help people, and then go down there to attack the people [who are trying to help],” said Gingrich on Wednesday morning.

“It is truly despicable to watch people like this operate … She’s so dishonest,” he added.

The progressive New York lawmaker claimed on Monday that U.S. border agents were forcing migrants to drink water out of toilets in order to survive — and to exist under other harsh and extreme conditions — while border patrol officers merely sat back and laughed at the situation.

“I see why CBP officers were being so physically & sexually threatening towards me,” the New York lawmaker tweeted dramatically on Monday after leaving a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility in Texas.

Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, pushed back hard against the Democrat early this week in comments during a “Fox & Friends” appearance.

Conway said at point that she saw a “photo op” by a Democrat on Sunday. “It’s called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez [of New York] going down to one of these facilities and making this outrageous claim that a woman [was] drinking from a toilet — which everybody who has control over that facility or control for the Border Patrol has said that’s not true.”

“They’ve not heard of this,” she added.

“And then when she was challenged by one of the few reporters who actually ever challenges her facts,” added Conway, “she put the window up — don’t let the air conditioning out. She put the window up … People need to challenge this because she’s one of 95 people, Democrats, who voted against the aid package. You either want the humanitarian aid, the $4.6 billion to go and help, or you want the photo op.”

“So if Chuck Schumer’s going to use those words,” Conway also said on this issue, “I’m going to turn it right back around on the 95 Democrats in the House who couldn’t see their way for $4.6 billion in humanitarian aid that this president signed yesterday, [in a] great bipartisan effort.”

Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents disputed AOC’s comments about migrants drinking toilet water.

One official explained that the facility contains prison-style toilets, in which drinking water is dispensed from a fountain at the top that’s attached to the toilet — all part of a single unit.

“No one is drinking toilet water,” the official said. “They’re drinking potable water from the sink attached to the toilet.”
