We are in strange territory, folks. Just think of how far we’ve come – you are now living in a time where the conservatives, maybe we should say “the right” instead, are fighting for wholesale changes in the status quo, while the liberals are fighting to conserve the status quo.
In other words, we’re in a topsy-turvy world where the left are now the conservatives!
The left wants to conserve, and this is by no means a comprehensive list; the existing structure of the governing bodies, spending priorities, the Cold War foreign policy of the neoconservatives, and what I will just refer to as “modern lifestyles.”
The right wants to change these existing paradigms, and thus cannot truly be called “conservative” in the political sense.
Interestingly, this shift is expressing itself in unusual ways. The left and right are still married to their tactics. We see the left employing revolutionary rhetoric and violence in their pursuit of protecting the status quo – like firebombing Tesla dealerships and GOP offices. The right is still content to believe “the system” will step up and make things right – even with the knowledge that the system has been captured by the left, and hence their efforts to conserve it. The right still uses the rhetoric of conservatism – even though the system to be “conserved” will need to be overhauled.
One can imagine that the rightwing American feels a bit like the Tsarist Russian in 1922, or the Prussian in the Weimar Republic.
The point in understanding this fundamental concept comes down to action. The right needs to behave differently in order to bring about wholesale changes as opposed to conserving the status quo – even if those changes are ultimately a return to previous traditions.
