It lasted about two days.
The New York Times looked, for once, like a responsible paper when it called for a serious probe into rape charges against Democrat de facto nominee Joe Biden. And then they let the other shoe drop: Sunday they suggested to senators that the investigation be done by the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
This isn’t that far from their 1986 suggestion that FBI counterintelligence be run by the Soviet Union. Okay, we made up that Soviet line. Kinda.
The Times editorial compared its proposal for investigating Biden with its 2018 call for probing now-Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh, however, was investigated by the FBI, not the Republican National Committee (RNC). Imagine the hue and cry if President Trump would have proposed an RNC whitewash of Kavanaugh. The idea would have been dead on arrival.
To say with a straight face that a nominee of a party should be investigated by that same party is a notion so laughable that other journalists, even liberal ones, were quick to pile on in derision of the Times’ absurdity.
Jonathan Swan from Axios, no GOP cheerleader, said, “Is this satire? I’ve seen some spectacularly stupid stuff from NYT ed board but this might take the cake.”
Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said it was “absolutely astonishing.” Fox News’ Brit Hume called it “beyond parody.” As perhaps the best and most honest newsman in DC, Hume knows NYT stupidity when he hears it.
Even the DNC called the idea “absurd.” So said DNC communications director Xochitl Hinojosa in a tweet that was posted by ABC’s Johnny Verhovek and retweeted by Hinojosa herself.
It is stupefying that this idea was not shot down out of hand at the NYT editorial board meeting that spawned it. But such is the delusional quality of The New York Times, such is their retreat from reality, that they thought someone somewhere would join in their leftist fantasy. But heck, not even the DNC signed on. Pathetic.
