New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Scandal

cuomo resigns

Embattled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation today after having been found to have sexually harassed nearly a dozen women.

The New York Attorney General, Letitia James, released a report last week that found he had broken federal and state laws, yet her office had refused to charge him.

Cuomo has denied any wrongdoing.

Although he made the announcement today, he will not step down for another two weeks.

Cuomo Resigns

“The best way I can help now is if I step aside,” Cuomo said.

Just yesterday, Cuomo’s top aid, Melissa DeRosa, had resigned

DeRosa was implicated by AG James’ report, in which she reportedly admitted to retaliating against one of Cuomo’s accusers, Lindsey Boylan, by leaking her personnel files to various media outlets in an attempt to discredit her.

The New York Times reported that DeRosa has been the one constant advisor who has stood by Cuomo as other top administration staff have left.

Criminal Charges

It may not be so easy for Cuomo as resigning. After the AG report came out, one of Cuomo’s accusers filed a criminal complaint – which prompted the Albany Sheriff to suggest that an arrest could be possible if the allegations pan out:

Sheriff Craig Apple, a Democrat, confirmed receipt of the complaint with the Post and said sheriff’s officials have since contacted the Albany County District Attorney’s office.

Apple raised the possibility of arrest and prosecution but said they would be contingent on the claims being substantiated and the discretion of the DA…

“I mean it was — he was like cupping my breast. He cupped my breast,” the woman told investigators.

Cuomo also, according to the victim’s statements in the report, “moved his hand to grab her butt cheek and began to rub it” for at least five seconds.

Cuomo has also been accused of causing the deaths of thousands of senior citizens through his COVID nursing homes policies, but the Biden Justice Department had declined to conduct a civil rights investigation into the matter.

New York Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul will take the reins in New York when Cuomo’s resignation is complete.

Reactions are coming in, and at least one Cuomo opponent, Fox News’ Janice Dean, is breathing a sigh of relief.

Cuomo had been hailed as the shining exemplar of leadership by the media, Democrats, and the left during the COVID pandemic.
