According to a new poll, a strong majority have a poor view of the economy – and the numbers have only gotten worse. 

More disturbingly, more than half of Americans don’t think it’s going to get better any time soon.

The poll was conducted by Associated Press-NORC.

Americans Aren’t Pleased With Economy

“As the growth of the U.S. economy slows, prices increase, and supply chain issues persist, 65% percent of Americans consider the national economy to be in poor condition,” the poll found.

The survey findings also showed that nearly half of Americans “expect the national economic situation to get even worse next year.”

That’s terrible news for a Democrat Party that holds the slimmest of margins in both houses of Congress as we approach the upcoming midterms.

Only 35% indicated that they believe the economy is very good, somewhat good, or leaned toward the view that the economy was good.

Only 2% percent believed that the economy is very good, but almost ten times that amount – 19% – believe the economy is very poor.

These numbers seem to reflect a significant change since September when a similar poll was taken.

In the earlier September poll, 2% said the nation’s economy was very good and 27% said it was somewhat good. 

President Biden has been dealing with a number of crises – from the disastrous pullout of Afghanistan that resulted in 13 dead U.S. servicemen to the ongoing illegal immigration crisis. 

In politics, even major crises can be forgiven, but often a poor economy cannot. 

As legendary Democrat strategist James Carville famously noted, “It’s the economy, stupid.”

The newest poll also reported, “As in past months, less than half of Americans are very confident they can keep up with their expenses or pay an unexpected bill of $1,000, and only a quarter think they will have enough savings for retirement.”

“However, the public is slightly more positive about their ability to find a job than they were at the beginning of the pandemic: 36% are confident they would be able to find a job, up from 25% in February 2020,” the survey noted.

According to apnorc.org, the margin of sampling error is +/- 4.0 percentage points.
