Obama is back in the spotlight for the 2018 midterms – and not just Barack.
At Johannesburg honoring the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth, during part of his lengthy speech, Barack said: “We now stand at a crossroads.” What he said next makes it clear that he was speaking about Trump. “Should we understand the last 25 years of global integration is nothing more than a detour from the previous inevitable cycle of history,” he continued, “where might makes right and politics is a hostile competition between tribes and races and religions? And nations compete in a zero-sum game constantly teetering on the edge of conflict until full-blown war breaks out? Is that what we think?”
So, clearly he shares the “chicken little” view of the Trump presidency that his fellow liberals in the media have, and Michelle Obama is no different. Now that her school lunch crusades are over with, she’s turned her attention towards fighting another target: Trump. Just a couple of months ago she publicly scolded female Trump supporters, who she blasted as being “afraid” of a female President. Now, according to Politico; “Michelle Obama is jumping into the 2018 campaigns with a voter registration initiative that will be strictly nonpartisan.” The “nonpartisan” comment is a bit misleading. It’s not like you can have a voter registration drive and explicitly advertise that you’re only willing to register people that will vote Democrat. To promote the “nonpartisan” drive, she’ll be joined by a number of A-list celebrities, including Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Chris Paul, Janelle Monae, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. A total of zero of them voted for Trump in the 2016 election.
They’re all organized under a new group Michelle Obama created called “When We All Vote,” which is staffed with Obama alumni. Valerie Jarrett is President of the group’s board. The group will have an $8 million budget, which will be raised through corporate sponsorships and foundation grants. In other words, by all the non-traditional funding methods that Democrats have generally spoken out against.
Michelle said that Trump’s victory has caused her to lose hope in America, and of course, she thinks that because Trump has made it his explicit goal to reverse the Obama legacy. And as we’ve already seen, reversing that legacy means unprecedented economic growth, the defeat of ISIS, among many other beneficial accomplishments. Though my favorite “accomplishment” of the Obama legacy, and one I hope Trump doesn’t end, was a net loss of 1,042 state and federal Democrat seats, including congressional and state legislative seats, governorships, and the presidency. Hopefully, Obama’s involvement will prove just a boon to Republicans this November, as it did in 2010 and 2014.
