Maxine Waters Says Haitian Illegal Immigrants Treated ‘Differently’ Because ‘They Are Black’

Maxine Waters Says Haitian Migrants Not Treated 'As Human Beings... Because They Are Black’

On Sunday, Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters said that Haitian illegal immigrants at the U.S. southern border had been treated differently from Afghan refugees, in part because the Haitians are black.

Among other comments, Waters also said that the government should have vaccinated the roughly 15,000 illegal immigrants that had encamped under the Del Rio bridge.

Waters made her remarks during an interview on MSNBC’s “Alex Witt Reports.”

Waters Compares Haitians To Afghans

Waters told Witt, “They should treat them like they are treating the Afghans. We’re bringing Afghans by the thousands into the country, and they deserve to be brought in because they assisted us in the war.”

“That’s how they should be treating the Haitians, bringing in those who are eligible, vaccinating and making sure that we’re not simply trying to drive them back with our border patrol on horses, with their reins, looking as if they’re beating them,” Waters said.

Witt asked, “You mentioned the Afghan refugees, those coming into our country. Why the different approach to them versus the Haitians?”

Seemingly answering her own question, Witt continued, “Yes, I know, there are those that have the special visas and they’re coming in because they assisted the United States during this 20 year war. But is there more to it, the difference between these two approaches?”

The Democrat Waters took bait, arguing that the Haitians’ race is what makes the difference.

Waters said, “Let me just say this, that Haitians have been the victims of, you know, not only our country but Canada and France, for years, historically.”

Waters: ‘They Have Been Exploited’

“They’re black. They’re poor. It’s the poorest country in the hemisphere,” Waters said. “They have been exploited.”

Waters continued, “It does not appear that they are seen in the same way that they see others. Haitians have been the victims because they were the first country to fight off, you know, the repression of France.”

“Of course, France has made them pay a big price for it,” Waters added. “Yes, I think they’re treated differently because they’re black, because they’re Haitians, and because traditionally they have not been treated as human beings.”

Another, simpler explanation for the difference in approach between Afghans and Haitians could be that, in the latter case, tens of thousands of people illegally crossed the border and kept pushing towards the interior.

In the former, individuals were part of a deliberate operation to bring them to designated areas in the U.S.
