Mark Steyn Reminds Democrats: The Confederate Flag Belongs To Their Party

Columnist Mark Steyn weighed in on the Confederate flag debate, saying it’s absurd that the Republican party has been linked with the controversial relic because it’s actually a “Democrat flag.”

Steyn ripped the Democrat party historically, saying they were “the largest and most powerful institution supporting slavery” and that they’ve “never come to terms with the evil of its past.”

“The idea that Republicans can have the Confederate flag hung around their necks is ridiculous,” Steyn stated. “It’s a Democrat flag. The states that seceded during the Civil War were all Democrat states, that’s their flag. The slave states were Democrat states, the racist states until the 1960’s were Democrat states.”

Watch Steyn’s blistering commentary and Sean Hannity’s segment which explains the real history behind slavery and the Confederate flag below …

Here’s a flashback of the Democrat’s ownership of the Confederate flag provided by none other than Jesse Jackson Jr.  During an interview with Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan, Jackson stated:

“There is no doubt that the Democratic Party is the party of the Confederacy, historically, that the Democratic Party’s flag is the Confederate flag.  It was our party’s flag.  That Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, that Stonewall Jackson strongly identified with the Democratic Party, that secessionists in the South saw themselves as Democrats and were Democrats.  That is so much of the Democratic Party’s history, since it is our nation’s oldest political party, which has its roots in slavery.”

Jerome Hudson of Human Events wrote, “How did the same Jim Crow Democrats who fought tooth-and-nail with segregationists to keep blacks on a virtual plantation become the party that now wins 95% of the black vote?  Republicans passed Civil Rights laws, Democrats wrote revisionist history.”

That revisionist history continues with today’s Confederate flag debate.

Comment – Have Democrats successfully re-written history on the Confederate flag and if so, how do Republicans keep allowing this to happen?

  • Those Democrats were not liberals nor progressives. They were conservatives. Where are the conservatives now? What flag are they trying to protect now?

  • The conservatives now want to support America by impeaching POTUS, doing away with SCOTUS, keeping Congress from doing anything. All while they are wanting to secede.

  • Nice try, Allen. But no cigar! The Democrats were the primary party that seceded and the same one who were the Carpetbaggers after the war. The KKK, Jim Crow, the abuses of the poll tax, the disenfranchising of black voters, etc.... all rests on the Democrats, who even went so far as to split and call themselves the Dixiecrats. Check real history. They were NOT conservatives... they were the Democratic Party before the Democrats embraced Marxism. We can all thank the Dept. of Education for dumbing down the general public to the truth of our history. And these people are so willing to put the blame on a flag rather then the person who pulled the trigger. HATE must be taught. And trust me, the Confederate flag didn't cause anyone to be a mass murderer.

  • Oh, Susan(na)!
ONLY 9 of the 124 politicians from “Confederate states” (all Democrats) voted for the Civil Rights Act. Only 9.
It didn’t get a single Southern Republican vote
    - not one.
There’s a reason why when we look at our nation’s history, practically every state that fought for the Confederacy,
    and in turn supported slavery
    (and are today “red”/Republican states),
are also the same ones that:
    Opposed women’s suffrage.
    Supported segregation.
    Banned interracial marriage.
    Opposed the Civil Rights Act.
...and are whining and crying now over some misguided reverence for a flag of a now non-existent country that warred against these UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and LOST!

  • For those of you unable to click the link: When the Democratic party was the party of racism, they were considered conservatives while Republicans were considered the liberals. It’s why Republicans mostly flourished in the North while Democrats ruled the South. That all began to change around the mid-40′s during President Truman’s time in office. He was the first Democratic president who really began to push civil rights into the Democratic platform. It was a move which was so controversial among Southern Democrats that it briefly spawned the “Dixiecrats” in 1948, which was a segregationist party that picked renowned racist Strom Thurmond as its presidential candidate, winning the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia. I would like to point out that those are all former Confederate states and are currently states considered “strongly Republican.” By the way, the staunch racist and segregationist Thurmond, who was furious that Democrats were embracing equality, denounced his allegiance to the party in 1964 and joined the Republicans. You know, the same year the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed, officially ending segregation. This was also around the same time that the GOP was implementing what’s known as the “Southern Strategy” – a strategic ploy to pander to white racism to lure in voters as more African-Americans began aligning with Democrats.

  • forwardprogressives is a lying liberal rag without a single word of truth.
It’s a liberal tool used to keep the clueless liberals misinformed.

  • Of course that the fact that the two parties have totally changed sides since the Civil War has nothing to do with anything, correct? Or that the Dixiecrats of the 60's have become today's Tea Party Republicans. I guess that means nothing either.
