As you know, summer is here. And when you live in the south, hot takes on a new meaning. A crew of emergency-responders in Waco, Texas, stopped to help an elderly woman whom they noticed was struggling to mow her lawn in the hot sun.
According to a neighbor, 98-year-old Margaret Durham still regularly cuts her grass, but the EMT crew saw potential danger and decided to pitch in.
I know how they felt when they saw her mowing in the high heat. They were probably shocked and then overwhelmed with the thought of helping her and to make sure she was OK. My mother is 90-years-old and she still wants to do things on her own. We have to step back and watch to make sure she doesn’t go too fast or hard, so I can understand Ms. Durham’s attitude, but she needs to take it easy.

The East Texas Medical Center ambulance crew was between calls when they saw Margaret Durham in her Waco yard, cutting the grass.
“She’s elderly and looked exhausted, she was in a dangerous slope of the yard, possibly could fall and lose control of the lawn mower and injure herself, ya know, the need for us to intervene was there,” one of the EMTs said.
Durham appeared to be overheated, so the first responders turned around and headed back to the house to help her finish the mowing job.
Neighbor Dashlin James was working on his car outside and happened to witness the act of kindness.
“It’s greatly appreciated, and I’m sure she appreciated it as well,” James said.
James said even though his neighbor is 98, she still mows her own lawn.
“Our job here is for us to help people and that’s what we like doing,” another EMT said. “That’s why we’re called to do what we do.”
Cutting grass in the hot sun doesn’t seem like it would be that taxing, but it is. Looks can be deceiving. I can’t imagine my mother of 90-years old cutting the grass in the Texas summer. Most men who cut grass and are out there for longer than 30 minutes are drenching in sweat when they finish the job, so you can only imagine how a 98-year-old elderly woman would feel.
I wan to send a big thank you to the EMTs for relieving Ms. Durham. Hopefully, the neighborhood has set up a service to help take care that in the future.
What do you think of this elderly superwoman? Is she just a tad bit too independent? Should she watch out for her health and allow young folks to do it for her? Share your comments below and add this article to your Twitter/Facebook timeline.
