Marc Short Leaves Trump White House

Breaking news this morning as we’re learning that Marc Short, President Trump’s top Capitol Hill liaison, is leaving the White House.

Short, who has been with the Administration longer than most staffers, will be taking a position at the Guidepost Strategies consulting firm as well as teaching at his alma mater the University of Virginia.

Politico broke the scoop:

President Donald Trump’s legislative affairs director is heading for the exits just as the White House gears up for a major Supreme Court nomination battle and approaches a daunting midterm election landscape.

Marc Short, one of the administration’s longest-serving senior aides and a frequent spokesperson for the president on television, is planning to depart by July 20, according to a person familiar with the plans.

This isn’t good news for a White House that has been hemorrhaging talent since the beginning. And to make matters worse, Short is leaving at a time when his skills are needed the most.

President Trump has just nominated a new justice for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. While Kavanaugh’s credentials are impeccable, Democrats are already lining up to oppose his nomination. This gives Senate Republicans only a slim chance of confirming Kavanaugh. With John McCain living out his last days in Arizona and not voting anymore, Republicans may need to cajole a few red-state Democrats into voting with them. Short was the liaison to make that happen, but now he’s departing. Democrats are determined to block this nomination. Without Short, an experienced Hill handler, to smooth things over with on-the-fence Democrats, the effort to get Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court bench just became that much harder.

Let’s hope President Trump has other plans for convincing a few Democrats to join with Republicans to confirm Kavanaugh.
