Liz Cheney Speaks Out To Defend Voter ID Laws After Voter Suppression Allegations

Liz Cheney

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) spoke out this week to defend voter ID laws after Democrats have claimed they are examples of voter suppression.

Cheney Defends Republican Election Efforts

Cheney was quick to defend efforts Republicans are making in several states to pass election security laws, denying that the laws in question were linked to former President Donald Trump’s claims that the 2020 presidential election was illegitimate.

“You have to look at the specifics of each one of those efforts,” Cheney said while appearing on “Axios on HBO.” “I think if you look at the Georgia laws, for example, there’s been a lot that’s been said nationally about the Georgia voter laws that turns out not to be true.”

“I will never understand the resistance, for example, to voter ID,” she added. “There’s a big difference between that and a president of the United States who loses an election after he tried to steal the election and refuses to concede.”

Cheney Refuses To Back Down On Trump Attacks

Though she wanted to defend Republican election bills, Cheney did not take back her attacks on Trump, calling his refusal to acknowledge Biden’s legitimate victory “really dangerous.”

“I think about 2000,” she said. “I think about sitting on the inaugural platform in January of 2001 watching Al Gore. … I’m sure he didn’t think he had lost. We had fought this politically very, very intense battle.”

“And he conceded,” Cheney said. “He did the right thing for this nation. And that is one of the big differences between that and what we’re dealing with now and the danger of Donald Trump today.”

Trump Celebrates Cheney Ousting

This comes after Cheney was ousted from her leadership role by Republicans for voting to impeach Trump earlier this year. Trump immediately spoke out to celebrate after she was ousted.

“Liz Cheney is a bitter, horrible human being,” Trump said in a statement, according to Yahoo News. “She has no personality or anything good having to do with politics or our country. She is a talking point for Democrats, whether that means the border, the gas lines, inflation, or destroying our economy.”

“She is a warmonger whose family stupidly pushed us into the never-ending Middle East Disaster, draining our wealth and depleting our great military, the worst decision in our country’s history,” Trump concluded. “I look forward to soon watching her as a paid contributor on CNN or MSDNC!”
