Lindsey Graham Plans to Cut Funding for WHO After Trump Remarks

Senator Lindsey Graham has said he would block funding for the WHO after President Donald Trump made similar remarks due to their role in the coronavirus outbreak.

Trump: WHO Called “Every Shot Wrong” In Coronavirus Crisis

In an interview with Sean Hannity, the president slammed the World Health Organization (WHO) for being “very China-centric… basically everything was very positive for China.” Trump argued that the WHO had “called every shot wrong,” in the coronavirus crisis, including “strongly recommending” against his shut down of the borders.

“They didn’t want to say where [coronavirus] came from. For many years, we’ve been funding the World Health Organization,” Trump said.

Repeating a threat he made at an earlier press conference, the president said that they were going to look at defunding the WHO “because I think every step that they made, everything that they said was wrong and always in favor of China… So it’s one of those things where we are the one that is the primary funder so we are going to take a very strong look at that.”

The director of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, attacked the president, claiming that Trump and other world leaders were “politicizing” the coronavirus outbreak, and if they didn’t stop, there would be “many more body bags.”

Graham: “I Will Take the Burden Off the President”

However, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that deals with foreign funding, said he would “take the burden” of deciding this off of the President.

“In the next appropriations bill, there’s not going to be any money for the WHO. I’m in charge of the appropriations subcommittee, and I’m not going to support funding the WHO under its current leadership,” Graham told Fox News, labelling the WHO as “deceptive,” “slow,” and “Chinese apologists.”

“I don’t think they’re a good investment under the current leadership for the United States,” he continued. “Until they change their behaviour and get new leadership, I think it’s in America’s best interests to withhold funding, because they have failed miserably when it comes to the coronavirus.”

It’s fantastic to see Senator Graham step up and support the president in a time of crisis. If all the Republicans in Congress were as ready to fully back the president and his agenda like this, we would be in a much better place.
