Kim Hak Song, an American citizen of Korean decent, has been detained by the North Korean government on charges of suspicion of “acts against the state.” Song works for the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, a school founded in 2010 by evangelical Christians.

“A relevant institution of the DPRK detained American citizen Kim Hak Song on May 6 under a law of the DPRK on suspension of his hostile acts against it,” KCNA said. DPRK is short for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name.
A third U.S. citizen, Kim Sang Dok, who was associated with the same school, was detained in late April for hostile acts, according to the North’s official media.
Song is the fourth American currently behind held by the North Korean regime.
The other three Americans are Kim Sang Dok, Otto Warmbier, and Kim Dong Chul. Dok is associated with the same university as Song and Chul is a Christian missionary. Warmbier was detained after trying to steal a propaganda poster.
In the past, North Korea has used held American citizens to receive high-profile visits from American dignitaries.
During the Obama administration, former President Jimmy Carter was sent to North Korea to secure the release of an American who was charged with illegally entering the isolated Communist state. Carter had also acted as an envoy for the United States and North Korea. The Trump administration has requested that President Carter remains on the sidelines this time.
With a fourth American now held captive by the North Koreans, perhaps it is time for President Trump to act.
I don’t think a military solution is necessary however the normal route of sending a diplomat to ease tensions is also not the correct response.
President Trump has been working through and with China to put pressure on the North Korean regime. Perhaps this renewed relationship should be used to bring these four Americans home.
China seems willing to do what it takes to keep North Korea in line in order to avoid a trade war with the United Staes. This is a good step. President Trump doesn’t want American galavanting all over the world flexing its muscles and putting American lives at risk. But using our allies in China we can make sure that our citizens are brought home and North Korea and the rest of the world can’t accuse us of interference.
